Covid-19 Update

April 3, 2020

Rockway Gardens

Important Reminder re COVID19:
While Rockway Gardens remains open at this time, for the safety of all, we ask that you practice physical distancing of at least two meters and refrain from visiting the gardens if you are feeling unwell or have traveled outside of Canada within the last 14 days. Based on recent directives from the Ministry of Health we have had to cordon off seating/tables in the gardens and the gazebo so they are no longer available for use.  We will continue to monitor developments, follow the guidance of the City of Kitchener and will communicate any further decisions as required.

We are starting spring cleanup on a very limited basis with limited staff and the volunteer programs are suspended until further notice. The staff have put a large number of safety features in place for disinfecting, handwashing and maintaining distance.

We know that Rockway is a very popular wedding/family/graduation photography spot particularly in the Spring but we do want to remind people hoping to use Rockway as a background for their photos that the two metre distancing and less than 5 people rules also apply in the gardens.

The good news is that if we follow the rules and maintain physical distancing (and do not go around the taped off areas), then we are free to enjoy the the tulips, daffs and hyacinths that are beginning to pop up.  I think we can all appreciate some colour in our lives !!!  Keep safe.

gardenKitchener Seminars, Workshops and Garden Tours

We have cancelled all seminars and workshops until mid-May.  We are all hoping that the “planking the curve” initiatives are working and that we will be able to get back to our scheduled events sometime in late May.  In the meantime, we are exploring ways to keep you up-to-date on gardening initiatives in the City.  This is the perfect time to mention that almost all of our garden centre partners (where you get a discount as a member) have instituted “hands off” ways to buy plants at their nursery.   Check your favourite nursery’s website to find out more information on how you can continue to support our local nurseries.

So many of our members look forward to the annual Bulb and Plant Sale, scheduled this year for May 30th.   We have begun to explore possible ways to offer the 20,000 bulbs and hundreds of plants for sale under the current physical distancing guidelines.   Keep tuned for updates on the Bulb and Plant Sale.

We were sad to hear that the Region of Waterloo has had to cancel all “Jane’s Walks” for 2020 so our Walk at Rockway scheduled for May 3rd will also be cancelled.  We usually had 70 or 80 people join us for our walk to take in the beauty of the gardens and to hear about the long history of Rockway.  We will look at possible garden tours later in the summer if possible.

At the current time we are hoping that our evening garden tours in June, July and August will be a go but this will depend entirely on whether or not physical-distancing is still in place. Some adjustments may need to be made, but there will be more information to follow as the dates get closer.

We encourage you to keep following us on social media for updates.   And, soon you will be busy in your own gardens and we are hoping that will bring you some joy.
